Thrombolytic Treatment
Thrombolytic Treatment
Thrombolytic therapy is a treatment used to break up dangerous clots inside your blood vessels, such as the one in the deep veins of your legs, called deep vein thrombosis or DVT. This is accomplished by injecting a clot-dissolving medication into a blood vessel. In some cases, the medications flow through your bloodstream directly to the clot and in other cases, your physician guides a long, thin tube, called a catheter, through your blood vessels to the area of the clot. The tip of the catheter may carry special attachments that mechanically break up the clot or it may deliver medications to break up the clot.
